Stepping into HBBSS in spring, what you see may be the grand and magnificent teaching buildings; what you hear may be the bright and confident sound of reading; who you are accompanied may be the highly talented and learned teachers. But if you take a closer look, you will definitely find the slogan in every corner of the school - "Chinese Core, World Stream".

In the past six years, HBBSS has been upholding this slogan, rooting in the best Chinese culture and drawing on the superiority of international education, developing students' personalities in four dimensions: mental realm, individual accomplishment, academic ability and potential, and giving them a good environment to fully develop and show their strengths. With the educational idea of 'building on strengths and equalising weaknesses', helping ordinary children become excellent and outstanding children become more brilliant. Today, let's take a look at the splendid academic life of students at HBBSS.

Curriculum implementation shows strengths

Before you go, please select student status:

For students in Grade 1-3, please take a look at Foundation Programme Implementation at HBBSS, where you will get a unique dual-teacher system from China and abroad. You will get immersive bilingual subject teaching in four dimensions: character and behaviour, perception and practice, Chinese and English, and quantity and space, laying a solid foundation for your lifelong learning and development.

For students in Grade 4-5, you will experience a curriculum with multi-categories and multi-disciplines -- some subjects as electives, a multi-scene and all-round bilingual teaching format and personalised and systematic practical activities. By the end of Year 5, you will not only have an excellent overall literacy, with language and mathematics at the level of a quality primary school, but also be well ahead of your peers in all aspects of English, with English reading and language expression skills, basically at the same level as native-speakers in the same age group.

For students in Grade 6-9, your study schedule will be made up of moral education, academic learning and inquiry. The foundation curriculum of HBBSS will provide you with a solid foundation as you move on to the senior secondary level, and show great strengths in English and other subjects with English, so that you are sure to achieve impressive results when you attend academic examinations in all subjects.

At HBBSS, you get much more than academic learning . Each week we have a wide variety of optional and club classes. The Primary Section offers 39 optional classes, 47 club classes and 19 special-interest classes to help children develop their interests and aesthetic sensibilities. The Junior Section offers 20 optional courses and 19 club courses, including academic, arts and sports courses. The optional and club courses are diverse and reflect a certain gradient of differentiation, fully meeting the needs of students in terms of their personality development, gradually focusing on their aspirations on the basis of comprehensive development, and laying a solid foundation for their future studies and careers.

In addition to the colorful school curriculum, HBBSS also strongly encourages and supports students to participate in more competitions outside school, constantly challenging themselves and pushing their limits. Students of HBBSS have won many prestigious prizes in advanced competitions such as the 21st Century English Speech Contest, the World Junior Robotics Olympiad, Maths AMC8, AMC10/12 and the British Physics Assessment. In addition, students have won numerous gold prizes and first prizes in painting, calligraphy and dance competitions. We have also won awards in many high-level competitions such as fencing, darts, ice hockey, skiing and football. According to incomplete statistics, 537 students have won awards in various high-level competitions in the first semester of 2022.

Special activities cultivate capacity

The students of HBBSS are far more than just outstanding in the academic field, they also show the remarkable abilities in various activities in arts and sports.

The Chinese Culture Festival and Chinese Culture Week are special activities that have been offered at HBBSS since its inception. Students will be able to create small posters and boards on the theme of different dynasties, experience traditional sports and traditional arts, as well as dress up in traditional Chinese costumes and experience the beauty of traditional dress on Dress Up Day, and the popular Chinese Debate Competition and Chinese Drama Festival. During the one-week-long programme, the children not only participated in promoting traditional Chinese culture, but also developed their organisational skills.

The school holds an annual Science fair where students work in groups on science projects and have a centralised presentation of their posters and finished products. Parents are also invited to participate by providing career-related science and technology-related booths to broaden students' horizons and increase their interest in science and technology and their own creativity.

In terms of developing students' social responsibility and practical skills, HBBSS has held charity fair annually and various social practice activities. In the charity fare, students acted as "buyers" and "sellers", using all their eloquence to sell the goods on their stalls. Stationery of different shapes, limited edition handicrafts, novel toys, playful dolls, and a variety of reading materials ...... all sold out, which not only witnessed the friendship and joy among students, but also a symbol of social responsibility practised with love. Some of the money raised from the charity fare was donated to the Shanghai Red Cross, or to sponsor children with congenital diseases, or to help students in need at other schools in Jinshan District.

In addition, students of HBBSS participated in the practical activities with great enthusiasm. Many famous places such as Guangfu Lin Cultural Heritage Museum, China Maritime Museum, Fengxian Bay Forest Park and Fengjing Ancient Town have left the footprints of students' exploration. Xia Han, a Grade 8 student, took part in a research trip with parents during the summer vacation, which is about The Yellow River humanities science. Under the guidance and encouragement of her teacher at HBBSS, Xia Han compiled what she saw and heard and gained from the trip into an article, which was eventually published in the Secondary School Science and Technology journal in the January 2022.

The Make a Difference (Growth) campaign has been popular with students and parents since the school's inception. Students, parents and teachers can all participate by each setting actionable goals for a month and witnessing their own changes at the end of the month. "One step at a time can make a thousand miles; a small stream can make a river and a sea.” It takes constant refinement for a young eagle to spread its wings and fly high. Many students have been able to improve their reading levels, exercise and improve their artistic skills through this activity.

Leadership is an ability that should not be overlooked in the process of personalised development of students. With the original intention of providing more opportunities and platforms for students, HBBSS has organised the Brigade Committee and Student Council, forming an orderly process of application - election - election - public announcement - appointment, providing the best platform for students who have the ability to show their leadership skills. Members of the Brigade Committee and Student Council can participate in the planning, promotion and organisation of some of the school's major events. They have successfully planned a series of activities such as the basketball carnival, and participated in the selection of the school's warm classrooms and warm dormitories.

After-school life shows individuality

The goal of education is self-reliance. Children's personalities develop earlier than people think, so it is important to provide them with a platform to develop their personalities to the full. Personal development requires independent choices, and HBBSS provides rich after-school programme to foster students the opportunity to make independent choices about what they can decide. The school has developed a diverse after-school arts and sports programme, which allows students to cultivate fertile ground and pave the way for the best, helping them to discover their interests and strengths and laying a solid foundation for their future studies and careers.

HBBSS gives every student the opportunity to create their own independent club based on their own interests and leadership. The "Tea Culture" club is a group of students who love tea culture and have formed their own club. The club will help students to understand and enjoy tea culture by organising tea performances, tea ceremonies and tea making activities. The Hanfu Club has become a unique sight by promoting the love of Hanfu and traditional culture through Hanfu catwalk and drama performances. These creative societies reflect the students' identification with traditional Chinese culture and are in line with the philosophy of "Chinese Core, World Stream".

Being able to develop independence in judging one's own values in the development of one's personality is also essential for achieving self-reliance. The growth of students cannot be achieved without the joint education of home and school. The combined efforts of the parents and the school can give our children a harmonious and moist growing environment. At the same time, parents of our school give talks on their own professional knowledge or follow the social hot spots and give exciting talks to the children. I am the Star is a musical showcase for the students after school. Many of the students have taken part in I am the Star to strengthen their interest in what they want to try or develop. Not only do the students get to show their individuality on this stage, but they also get to interact with other children.

Residential life has always been one of the specialties of HBBSS, but the independence and wealth of after-school activities after 3:30 place high demands on students' ability to communicate, cooperate and take responsibility. The students created a detailed room convention for the Warm Room Campaign, and the room leaders put together a collection of ideas from each room member to decorate their 'home' with a different theme. From the younger pupils who always missed their parents and wanted to go home, to the seniors who were able to take charge of their own lives, the children were able to break away from their egocentrism and work together to make themselves successful.

High-quality bilingual education is our strength, diversified academic and sports activities are our advantage, and rich and wonderful after-school activities are our speciality. The spring is so colourful, with the red and pink blossom, the green and smoky willow, and the flower-like faces of the children. HBBSS is a fertile ground to nourish students and support them to fly high to the stars and fly far to the sea.
