Hangzhou-Bay Bilingual School Hosts Parent Salon

On April 27th, the Parent Salon of Grade 2 of Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School was warmly held in the activity center. With the theme of "Boundaries Lead to Freedom", this event focused on the core topic of "How to Raise Confident and Self-disciplined Children", attracting many parents to actively participate. Parents and the school joined hands to discuss the scientific way of parenting.

Focus on the Issues, Seek Solutions Together

At the beginning of the event, Mr. Song, the grade group leader, briefly introduced the purpose of the salon: to help parents sort out common problems faced by second-grade students in their learning and growth, share practical methods, and help children become confident and self-disciplined little masters. Then, based on the survey results from the parents' questionnaires, common concerns were raised on the spot to evoke resonance. The homeroom teacher led the parents in a roundtable discussion to deeply analyze the root causes of the problems and, in line with the ideas from the book "A Mother with Boundaries, a Child Who Doesn't Need Supervision," explore feasible solutions. Parents actively participated, sharing their own experiences, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

The parents of G2-3 believe that when their children encounter problems with writing common Chinese characters, they should first understand the underlying reasons. Additionally, they should also pay attention to the differences in the development of each child's frontal lobe, ensuring adequate and reasonable sleep time, proper nutrition intake, and sufficient exercise time. Regarding the problem of disordered sentence structures, the parents have also proposed methods: starting with simple sentences to analyze and sort out the structure. When children have no ideas when writing or speaking, parents can help them sort out the structure and guide them on characters they cannot write, avoiding the children's fear of new characters during the writing process.

Regarding the math problems, the parents of Class Five reached a consensus through a roundtable discussion that in the face of their children's weak comprehension of application questions and their inability to break down the problem statements, they can read more math books in daily life and consciously integrate math into life to cultivate their children's ability to solve problems with mathematical thinking in real-life situations.

The formation of study habits is a very important part of the early primary school years. Parents of Class 4 shared their experiences with vivid examples of their children, emphasizing that the key to cultivating habits lies in "replacement" rather than "prohibition". If one wants to change a habit, it should be replaced by a new one.

Communication is the core to solving psychological problems. Take doing homework as an example. When a child shows resistance, parents should first determine the reason: is it because the questions are too difficult and they want to avoid them, or do they want to go out and play? At this time, you can try a "10-minute heart-to-heart talk before bedtime" to guide the child to express their true thoughts in a relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, parents need to be cautious not to pass on their own anxiety to their children.

The parents of Class 1 shared the following practical learning methods:1. Skillfully use various error management apps. 2. Use the "marking method" to check homework.

From the students' perspective, inspiration is ignited

This salon specially set up a student sharing session. Austin Xia, from G3-3, took the theme "The method that suits you is the best" and shared how he improved his efficiency through personalized learning planning. Ander Li, from G3-5, started from "The role of parents in my life" and expressed his understanding of parents' companionship and moderate guidance from a childlike perspective. The children's unadorned expressions made the parents in the audience smile knowingly at times and fall into deep thought at others - it turns out that the balance between love and rules lies in those details of letting go and supporting.

Teachers Offer Tips, Professional Guidance

During the teacher sharing session, teachers from various subjects, based on daily teaching cases, provided professional suggestions to parents on specific issues they raised, covering everything from cultivating subject-specific habits, time management to parent-child communication skills. The teachers emphasized that "boundaries" are not restrictions but rather a way to establish clear rule awareness and a sense of responsibility in children, thereby stimulating their intrinsic motivation. At the end of the event, Teacher Song concluded: "Only by respecting children's development laws can we enable them to thrive in a balance of freedom and self-discipline."

This salon, through the collision of diverse perspectives, provided parents with practical tools for scientific parenting and further narrowed the distance between home and school. After the event, many parents expressed that they had gained a lot and were looking forward to participating in such in-depth exchanges in the future. In the future, HBBSS will continue to hold reading clubs and a series of parent salons, building a platform for home-school co-education and jointly safeguarding the growth path of children with parents.
