While a late autumn chill settled over Shanghai, the educational warmth at Shanghai Zoo remained undiminished. Students from Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School embarked on an unforgettable field trip, transforming the zoo into an immersive classroom for biological discovery.

On November 17, 2025, despite the cold snap sweeping through the city, our determined young explorers set out for their scheduled autumn social practice at Shanghai Zoo.

A Journey of Exploration into the Animal Kingdom

By mid-morning, the campus was buzzing with excitement as students gathered at the zoo entrance. Undeterred by the crisp air, grades 6-9 organized themselves for a group photograph before breaking into smaller teams for their adventure.

The Herpetology House became their first laboratory. Within its climate-controlled habitats, students examined Yangtze alligators in their native environment and compared adaptations across ecosystems-from tropical rainforests to desert landscapes-gaining practical understanding of evolutionary biology.

Every exhibit window became a portal to discovery, with students exchanging excited observations while others leaned in to catch every word of their teachers' explanations.

At Swan Lake, the elegant courtship dance of black-necked swans captivated young audiences, while instructors used nearby educational displays to explain Shanghai's crucial position along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway for migratory birds.

A Practical Classroom for Life Education

The afternoon brought them to mammalian habitats. At Big Cat Territory, the powerful presence of Siberian tigers and African lions left lasting impressions-their commanding roars and graceful movements revealing the true nature of apex predators.

Students studied informational panels comparing social structures of lion prides with the solitary nature of tigers, while the primate section echoed with golden monkeys' acrobatic leaps and gibbons' resonant calls. One fortunate group witnessed spontaneous tool use as a monkey creatively employed a branch to reach food.

The Elephant Plaza offered close encounters with gentle giants, where students observed behaviors from ear-flapping thermoregulation to post-scratching rituals. Nearby, at the giraffe encounter, hands-on feeding sessions with fresh branches and carrots created memorable connections while teaching about the animals' daily rhythms.

Insights on the Return Journey

As the afternoon deepened, students departed with notebooks full of observations and minds buzzing with ideas. Beyond biological knowledge, they gained teamwork experience and developed deeper appreciation for nature's complexity.

The day's challenging weather conditions ultimately served as their own lesson-proving that nature's wonders don't only reveal themselves in ideal conditions, but often shine brightest when we venture out despite the elements.
