Just before Arbor Day on March 10, the Primary School of Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School turned into a green creative workshop. The "Green Promise" launch week activity was planned by the Primary School Student Brigade. Grades 1-2 did a "Clay Forest" activity, and Grades 3-4 did a "Plant a Tree with Chenille Sticks" activity. Through quizzes and crafts, the students learned to love the environment. The activity was guided by both the Brigade Advisor and the Class Advisors. From planning to doing, the Brigade Committee members practiced their organizing and leading skills. It was a good example of "students lead, teachers help."

Clay Forest: Green Hope from Little Fingers

Walking into the Grade 1-2 classrooms was like walking into a tiny fairy tale forest. The children sat at their desks. In front of them were round wood pieces and colorful clay. With their teachers' help, they used their small hands to make the trees in their hearts.

Before the craft, the Brigade Committee members led a short quiz. "Why is Arbor Day on March 12?" "To remember Grandpa Sun Yat-sen!" the children answered happily. Those who got it right won Dojo points for their group. Then the craft began. Everyone was excited. Teachers walked around and took photos of the busy children.

Plant T rees with Chenille Sticks: Weaving Green Dreams

The Grade 3-4 activity was led by the Brigade Committee members. In class, they stood in front and taught everyone about Arbor Day. "What do trees take in and give out when they make food?" "Why do we keep soil on the roots when we move a young tree?" Many hands went up. Students answered one after another. The Brigade members also told the "Lesson of Ancient Babylon," a story about a kingdom that cut down all its trees and became a desert. The students learned: "Trees are home. No trees, no home."

After the quiz, the craft started. Each group got green chenille sticks, wood bases, and tape. This was not real planting. They used the soft sticks to make their own little trees. They worked together. They twisted green sticks into leaves and brown sticks into trunks. Then they put them on the wood base. Some trees had big fluffy tops. Some had long branches like umbrellas. Some mixed different greens to make the tree look real. Soon, every desk was a little "chenille stick forest." The children showed each other their work and laughed together.

Students Plan, Students Grow

"This activity helped me know more about Arbor Day. I learned how people hurt nature and how we can help in our daily life. It also helped me practice speaking and organizing." – Shi Xitong, a Brigade Committee member from Class 2, Grade 4, felt he learned a lot.

"Even one tree is the start of a forest." This Arbor Day, the children of Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School planted green seeds with their hands. They showed that "taking care of green is not someone else's job – it is what we must do to live." We hope their love for nature will grow like the trees they made, and become big and strong in the future.
