On April 3, 2026, the auditorium of Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School hosted two spectacular debating feasts. Focusing on two timeless topics about life and the times—"AI enhances/weakens our creativity" and "Life should be about addition/subtraction"—middle school students formed debating teams. With clear logic, profound thinking, and agile expression, they engaged in multiple rounds of fierce confrontation. They not only demonstrated the critical thinking qualities of young people in the new era but also inspired all teachers and students to gain diverse insights into technology and life through the collision of ideas.

Session 1: Addition and Subtraction in Life—Exploring Wise Choices on the Path of Growth

The first debate centered on the humanistic topic "Life should be about addition/subtraction". Debaters from Grades 5–6 were the Proposition, and those from Grade 7 were the Opposition. The two teams presented an insightful dialogue on choices and trade-offs, revolving around the ways to realize life values.

The Proposition, advocating "life should be about addition", argued that personal growth is achieved through "addition"—accumulating knowledge to lay a solid foundation and exploring diverse fields to discover oneself. The debaters emphasized that addition is not blind accumulation but purposeful active construction. Only through constant exploration and accumulation can one unlock life’s possibilities and enhance personal value.

The Opposition, standing for "life should be about subtraction", contended that life’s value often shines through "subtraction"—letting go of impetuosity to focus on inner passion and eliminating distractions to deepen commitment to core fields. They clarified that subtraction is not retreat but a clear grasp of life direction, making life more profound through simplification.

Throughout the debate, both sides elaborated from the perspectives of life philosophy and growth laws: the Proposition highlighted the value of exploration, while the Opposition underlined the significance of focus. Their views, though different, complemented each other. Finally, based on argument depth, logical coherence, and teamwork, the judging panel awarded the winning team to the Grade 7 Opposition, and the Best Debater to Dou Kaixin from the Proposition.

Session 2: AI and Creativity—Exploring the Boundaries of Creation in the Tech Era

The second debate focused on "AI enhances/weakens our creativity". The Grade 8 Sun Team (Proposition) and Grade 9 Sunflower Team (Opposition) launched an in-depth discussion on the relationship between technology and human thinking.

The Proposition believed that AI, empowered by data processing and technology, breaks the skill barriers of creation—it enables ordinary people to express creativity without mastering professional techniques, frees creators from repetitive work, and allows them to focus on core ideas. With real-world examples of technological development, the debaters proved that AI does not replace human creation but expands the breadth and depth of creativity.

The Opposition argued that over-reliance on AI tends to cause cognitive inertia and weaken humans’ ability to create from scratch. Moreover, AI’s creation based on historical data is essentially "recombining the past", which may intensify creative homogeneity and stifle breakthrough innovation. The emotional warmth and unique thinking contained in genuine creation can never be replicated by algorithms. Through an analysis of the integrity of the creative process, the team stressed the importance of protecting original human thinking.

In the cross-examination and free debate rounds, both sides clashed heatedly over core divergences such as "the primary-secondary relationship between AI and humans" and "the essential definition of creation". The debate featured rational analysis of technological trends and profound adherence to the value of human thinking. In the end, the Grade 8 Sun Team (Proposition) won, and Yu Wenxin from Grade 9 was named Best Debater.

Critical Thinking Never Stops, Growth Never Ends

Although the two debates revolved around different topics, they both conveyed the philosophy that critical thinking is growth. From the relationship between technology and creation to the wisdom of life choices, students of Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School used debate as a carrier to show their ability to analyze complex issues rationally, tolerate diverse perspectives, and think proactively about the times and life.

The competition has ended, but the seed of critical thinking has been planted. In the future, the school will continue to hold various thinking activities to encourage students to stay curious, eager to explore, and good at thinking. On the path of pursuing truth and innovation, they will grow into young people with independent thinking and a sense of responsibility for the times.
