From April 9 to April 16, the third grade of Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School carried out a thematic learning activity centered on "Traditional Chinese Festivals." Aligned with the Chinese language curriculum, the activity integrated various forms such as research, group collaboration, poster creation, and presentations, aiming to deepen students' understanding of traditional festival culture and enhance their overall competencies.

Collaborative Inquiry

At the start of the activity, students in each class formed small groups to collect and organize information on traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival. Each group had designated roles, including Information Detective, Lead Editor, Creative Designer, Presentation Leader, and Visual Coordinator, ensuring that every student participated and fulfilled their responsibilities. By checking calendars, consulting family members, looking up books, and exploring online resources, students learned about the dates, customs, origins, and related stories of the festivals. They recorded their findings using tables and a combination of images and text.

Poster Creation with Rich Outcomes

After clarifying their roles, each group began creating themed posters for their chosen traditional festival. Each poster included the festival's date, customs, significance, or stories, along with relevant images or hand-drawn artwork. After a week of preparation, students completed a variety of distinctive posters.

Poster Presentation and Sharing

On April 16, each class held a poster-sharing session. Groups took turns presenting their posters and introducing their researched festivals to the class.

Many posters stood out for their thoughtful design and detailed content. One group focused on the Spring Festival, illustrating a pair of red couplets, firecrackers, and a family sitting around the dinner table. Next to the image, the story of the Nian beast was written neatly. Another group highlighted the Dragon Boat Festival, with a dragon boat at the center of the poster, paddlers rowing vigorously, and decorations of zongzi and mugwort leaves. The text introduced Qu Yuan's life and the origin of eating zongzi. Some groups showcased creative ideas—for example, a three-dimensional Mid-Autumn Festival poster where mooncakes were made to pop out using paper and clay, adding depth to the design. One group included an interactive feature on their Lantern Festival poster: a movable "lantern riddle flap" that viewers could lift to reveal the answer. Another group used a flip-book format to present the Qingming Festival, with each flap revealing customs such as spring outings, swinging, and kite flying. The combination of images and text made the presentation both engaging and easy to understand.

Traditional festivals are an important carrier of Chinese culture. Through this thematic learning activity, students were able to approach their traditions through inquiry and grow through collaboration.
