As the cicadas' song fades, the sound of reading returns. On the afternoon of August 31, the Middle School of Hangzhou-Bay Bilingual School (Shanghai Jinshan) held its grand opening ceremony for the first semester of the 2026 academic year. Hosted by Director Lu, the ceremony brought together Principal Jin, Vice Principal Yuan, and all middle school teachers and students, who, carrying the gains of the summer and high hopes for the new term, opened a fresh chapter together.

The ceremony began with the stirring national anthem. All teachers and students stood and sang in unison, their voices echoing through the hall and setting a dignified, uplifting tone for the semester ahead.

Igor Ran, the new-student representative from Grade 6, took the stage with a speech titled "From Curiosity to Creation." He shared his journey from LEGO and robotics to model aircraft and inventions, and looked back on the honors he had earned in national, Asian, and international competitions. Distilling his experience into four key lessons — focus, perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability — he encouraged his fellow students to stay curious and passionate, and to become better versions of themselves through hands-on practice.

Miu Miu Zhang from Grade 9 followed with a speech titled "The Starting Point of Action, the Echo of Time," recounting the days she had spent with local children at the Red Army Primary School in Tibet this summer. The children's innocent trust helped her rediscover the meaning of effort through being needed and recognized. She came to understand that not all growth requires a tangible certificate — action is where everything begins. Her sincere and humorous words drew rounds of applause, showcasing the spirit of independent thinking and confident expression that defines our students.

Mr. Tom, representing the international faculty, then offered his best wishes for the new semester. He shared his summer cultural journey across Europe — from Freud's former home to Shakespeare's birthplace, tracing the footsteps of great minds along the way. He reflected that what truly makes a building immortal is never the bricks and mortar, but the passion, curiosity, and imagination of the people within it. He then wished every student a brilliant semester ahead, one they would fill with one hundred percent enthusiasm and creativity.

Under the expectant gaze of the audience, Principal Jin delivered her address. She offered two stories from her summer as "opening gifts" for the new semester. First, citing the example of Chinese mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu, who attained the highest international honor in mathematics, she encouraged the students to see interest as the greatest driving force for growth — to try more, to open more doors for themselves, and to persist in turning their interests into strengths, much as one would in a marathon. Second, reflecting on the age of AI, she reminded everyone that AI is an assistant, not a substitute, urging them to use it well and wisely, stay discerning, and never "outsource" their own minds. She concluded by wishing all students a semester in which they nurture their interests, use AI well, and think critically, so that they, too, may become the starlight others look up to.

The arrival of the award ceremony brought the atmosphere to yet another high. The school presented awards including the "Outstanding Club Award" and the "Academic Progress Award," recognizing students who had excelled across academics, sports, arts, and clubs over the past semester. Behind these honors lies the school's long-held commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals — here, grades are never the only measure. The effort on the field, the brilliance on stage, and the responsibility taken in clubs are all equally worthy of being seen and celebrated. Each honor is a solemn recognition of past dedication and the best testament to the belief that everyone can succeed and every field offers a chance to shine. The smiling faces of the awardees, captured alongside the certificates in their hands, became the most touching scene of the ceremony, while the resounding applause continued to inspire more students to gather strength and press forward on their own paths in the semester ahead.

The autumn breeze writes the prologue; the future is full of promise. From today on, may every Hangzhou Bay student plant their interests in everyday life and write their actions into their answers. Guided by our philosophy of "Chinese Core, Global Vision," may they use their thinking to chart their course through the AI age, so that every effort finds its echo. Where the heart leads, action will follow — for every star that shines above was once simply a figure bold enough to begin.
