On September 12 – 13, Shanghai's First Middle School Student "AI + Life Sciences" Academic Showcase was held at Zhongshan School Affiliated to Shanghai Huangpu Institute of Education. Students from the junior high section of our school, with their project The Macro and Micro Worlds of Yingwuzhou Ecological Wetland, stood out among teams from across the city and won the highest team honor — the "Excellence Academic Showcase Project" (Excellence Award) — as well as individual awards including Outstanding Report Writing, Outstanding Modeling Design and Outstanding Artistic Style. The research team brought together four students from different grades — Wang Zixuan, Xue Siqi, Xu Xiran and Cheng Lejia — who grew together through three months of side-by-side inquiry.

For the students, the event was above all a complete exploration of how artificial intelligence can be applied across the entire process of life-science research — from field investigation and sample collection, to microscopic observation and species identification, and further to data analysis, 3D modeling and scientific communication, AI tools accompanied every step of the research. Through hands-on practice, the students came to understand firsthand that AI provides speed, while humans ensure accuracy, and that scientific judgment and responsibility always remain in human hands. It was a vivid example and a wonderful opportunity of "learning by doing."

The project took three months. Rooted in their home district of Jinshan, the students worked in Yingwuzhou Ecological Wetland, where they took part in field sampling, laboratory analysis and several rounds of online and offline training. Working as a team, they completed plant and animal surveys, micro-photography, 3D digital modeling and soil metagenomics analysis, and turned their findings into touchable physical models and a visual showcase website — letting every species in the wetland around them "be seen." The soil metagenomics sequencing data generated by the study have been uploaded to and archived in the China National GeneBank DataBase (CNGBdb) for sharing , so that this microscopic record from Jinshan's wetland can be seen and used by more researchers.

The students also built 3D digital models of representative wetland organisms and printed them in 3D, bringing their microscopic findings out of the laboratory as science-communication pieces that can be seen and touched.

On September 12, the students gave their live presentation and defense, winning high praise from the judges with their solid preparation and honest scientific attitude. On September 13, they were invited to take the stage again at the citywide awards ceremony, presenting their academic results to teachers and student representatives from across Shanghai.

At the ceremony, Professor Lu Baorong, Distinguished Professor of Fudan University and Dean of Xide College, shared three expectations for the students' growth: first, to master scientific methods — to fully grasp the complete basic research process and further sharpen their research questions in future studies so that their work better meets real needs; second, to keep the spirit of exploration — to always retain curiosity and persistence toward the unknown, and keep exploring with a truthful attitude; and third, to sow the seeds of truth, goodness and beauty — to pursue truth, goodness and beauty, keeping scientific curiosity while cultivating humanistic care, a sense of responsibility to the country and artistic and aesthetic literacy, so as to grow into high-quality builders useful to the nation.

Setting out from a wetland close to home, the students learned by doing and researched through learning, completing the full process of scientific inquiry. The Excellence Award is recognition, and even more, a seed. May the students carry Professor Lu's earnest words forward, continuing to pursue truth, goodness and beauty — walking from the land beneath their feet toward a wider world of science.
