Shanghai Jinshan Hangzhou Bay Bilingual School (HBBSS,) with the core aim of developing a Chinese identity with a global perspective, focuses on ethical education in conjunction with the international mainstream curriculum. HBBSS strives to cultivate capable members of society excelling in the 21-st century international arena and astute, studious, virtuous, and promising individuals. This hybrid curriculum consists of Foundation curriculum, Core curriculum, and Developmental curriculum.

Foundation Curriculum

The foundation course is targeted at students in grades 1-3, aiming to lay a solid foundation for students' lifelong development in four dimensions: morality and behavior, common sense and practice, Chinese and English, quantity and space.

In accordance with the educational requirements of the state and documents by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission,  the foundation curriculum encompasses three characteristics.

1.      Chinese & Expat Teachers Co-Teaching System

We use a homeroom class system for grades 1-3 in primary school, which utilizes both foreign teachers and Chinese teachers as homeroom teachers. The two cooperate in teaching non-art classes and managing classroom dynamics to create a comprehensive bilingual learning environment for the children.

2.      Effective Integration of Advanced Elements of International Education

While comprehensively implementing the national curriculum, we adopt an effective integration of domestic and foreign teaching materials with advanced elements of international education.

3.      Distinctive Subject Teaching

·         English:  Based on the practical situations of Chinese students, we adopt the most appropriate teaching methods for speaking English like native speakers.

·         Mathematics:  Mathematics curriculum fully integrates compulsory education with basic requirements reflected in state schools with distinctive teaching contents in mainstream American teaching texts.

·         Chinese:  On the basis of Shanghai Curriculum Standards, the school provides its unique Chinese teaching that showcases the foundation of Chinese learning under the background of “ a less exam-oriented system”.

·         Arts: Music, art, and physical education are taught by professional teachers, which are matched with personalized extracurricular activities to help students develop interests and enhance their talents.

Core Curriculum

The Core curriculum for grades 4-9 consists of academic and activity courses. As students advance in both grade and learning levels, the school curricula will be based upon students' learning ability and potential. Academic departments will implement a stratified course system for teaching organization purposes. The curriculum encourages students to tackle increasingly challenging coursework and pursue related courses of personal interest.

Corresponding with the educational requirements of compulsory education,  the core curriculum includes four features.

1.      Highly Selective and Diverse Curriculum System

The six subjects in core curriculum including Chinese, English, mathematics, experimental science, humanities as well as arts and sports form a scientific and comprehensive academic curriculum framework. Having a highly selective curriculum foster students’ comprehensive quality and also ensures their individual talents are nurtured.

   2. Stratified course system

Students in each grade can choose course categories or levels based on their practical competence, subject interest, and potential. The main subjects will carry out the implementation of stratified classes based on students’ own abilities that build upon one another.

2.      Comprehensive bilingual education in all scenes

Among mathematics and experimental science teaching, we initiate full-scene, comprehensive bilingual teaching by effectively fusing the advanced elements of American curriculum, which improves students' learning ability and communication skills in various disciplines under the context of English, in order to prepare for high school international curriculum system.

3.      Personalized and systematic practical activities

A personalized and systematic practical activity system involves five major areas: inquiry learning, personality development, experience practice, community service, and social activities. These activities additionally lay the foundation for students to realize their full potential,  explore future growth and life planning.
